Questioning the Existence of God

Is God Real? This is a question many people struggle with, whether you have wondered about this yourself or someone has asked you about it. With everything going on in today’s world, it’s not surprising that someone would question God’s existence and in turn, wonder if he is in fact real and if there is enough evidence of His existence to put your faith and trust in Him.

I don’t know where you find yourself today. Maybe you are an atheist or agnostic. Maybe you have not been exposed to the Bible and have not heard enough to decide if you believe God is real or not. Maybe you grew up being taught about God and believed in Him, but over time, began to doubt and just don’t know where you stand now. Wherever you find yourself, the good news is, there are answers to your questions. To get a clearer picture, let’s take a look at what the skeptics have to say and what the Bible says about the existence of God.

What Do the Unbelievers Say?

Skeptics, doubters, and unbelievers typically fall on a scale ranging from atheists, who believe that God, or any deity for that matter, does not exist, to agnostics, who aren’t sure whether there is a God or not, and even if he does exist, is most likely uninterested and uninvolved in our personal lives.

So if they don’t believe, or at the very least doubt that God exists, what do they believe? It’s hard to pinpoint exactly one thing. There are some common ideas among atheists and agnostics alike. One is that if God does exist the world would not have problems such as poverty, famine, and wars. Another thought is that religion itself, which should be pointed out is manmade, is the cause of these problems, thus, God must not be real. And lastly, and arguably the biggest reason atheists and agnostics will say they do not believe God is real, is because there is no physical evidence pointing to His existence.

What Does the Bible Have To Say?

The Bible has this to say. “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God” (Romans 1:20). There are so many miracles in nature that just cannot be explained away. Everything from how the solar system works to the perfect combination of elements to make things in nature grow, down to every detail of our DNA, points to a divine creator, God, who, “Hangs the earth on nothing” (Job 26:7). In Psalms it says that even the skies display his craftsmanship. Simple logic tells us that the things created didn’t just come to be all on their own. There has to be a Creator.

Even the fact that we have an “inner voice” that speaks to us, helping us to distinguish between right and wrong, directs us to a divine being, God. When you consider the Bible says that God has planted eternity in the human heart, it begins to all come together and make sense. It is not unreasonable to assume that there is a God who created us, loves us, guides us in choosing to do right or wrong, and reveals himself to those who seek Him.

Are there troubles in this world? Absolutely. Do some people, even those who say they believe in God, do horrible things? Unfortunately, yes. But this does not give us evidence that God is not real. If anything this even more emphasizes our need for His redeeming love and perfect plan for our lives.

You’ve Got Everything To Gain and Nothing To Lose

Here is another way to look at it. If you decided to believe in God, and in the end, you were to find out that He does not exist, you would have lost nothing. In living for God, you would have lived a good life, in a way that led you to respect and love others. On the other hand, if you decided not to believe, and you were to find out he does exist, you would have lost your eternal life. And finally, if you decide to believe that He is real, that God does exist, and you find out you were right. You would have gained everything; eternal life and much more than you could ever ask for or imagine.

Looking at it this way, why not take a chance? You don’t need to know all of the answers. You can begin exactly where you are and reach out and take the hand of the God who created the universe, the God who created you. He’s the God who loves you so much He gave His most precious treasure so He could spend eternity with you. You’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.
