The Purpose for My Life

The Purpose for My Life

Felt Needs

With nearly 8 billion people on the planet, it is easy to feel small and insignificant, just a speck in a sea of diverse people in a large world. Do you wonder if you are able to make any impact at all? Do you ever wonder what your purpose is? Let’s take a look and see what the Bible has to say about your life and the purpose God has for you.

In the Beginning

Before we look at the purpose of your life, let’s go back and take a look at what the Bible says about the beginning of the world and how your life ties into it.

The Bible begins by telling us that God created the heavens and the earth. It goes on to say that he also created everything on the earth, including man and then woman. Think about the earth and everything in it from the smallest organism to the tallest mountain to the deepest ocean. Consider how all of these things are intricately designed to work together to sustain every kind of life on the planet. That is how incredibly powerful and creative God is.

Now let’s look at your beginning. Let’s look at Psalms 139:13-14. “For you (God) created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;” It says you were “knit together’. This means that it wasn’t just by chance you are here. The God who created the universe thought of, designed, and wanted you.

Taking it one step further, Jeremiah 1:5 says, ”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you”. We see that not only did God design and want you, but he also has consecrated you. One meaning of consecrate is to devote something, or in this case, someone, that is you, to a purpose. You are designed to be here, you are important, and God has a purpose for you.

So What Is My Purpose?

“He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” (Ephesians 1:5)

The Bible may not spell out for you all of the little details of God’s purpose for you. But you were made with specific characteristics and unique gifts and talents, that will help you fulfill the purpose for which you were created. You can pray and ask God to reveal those things to you. And because He is a good God who loves you and wants to speak into your life, when you are still and listen, He will reveal those things in His time.

But there are a couple of specific things that God has purposed for everyone, including you, and this is a good place to start.

Love God and Worship Him

“Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’” Matthew 22:37

God has Purposed you to love Him. Notice that He said it was the first and greatest commandment. For Him to ask you to love Him that completely, it must be important. He loves you and wants to be in relationship with you.

God has purposed you to not only love Him but to please Him with your worship. “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13) This may surprise you, but God made you for His pleasure. In Zephaniah, it says that God takes delight in you. Part of your purpose is because of the love God has for you, to worship Him. “Let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,” (Hebrews 12:28)

Love Others

God has purposed you to love others. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

Because God has purposed us to love Him, and He loves everyone, we are instructed to love others as He loves us. It was important enough that it comes up throughout both the Old and New Testaments repeatedly, in various forms. Even Jesus Himself emphasized it numerous times, even going so far as to command it. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)

Love God. Love Others. He Will Reveal the Rest.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Proverbs 8:28

The beauty of God and His purpose for your life is that you don’t have to know every detail. God is in the details. He loves you, and He created you for His purpose. Love Him and love others. Then follow Him as He leads you and the purpose for your life unfolds.
